Two centuries of catering to the love of all things paper, from artist-designed chiyogami to gift envelopes, fans, and more.

One of our important makers at UGUISU, Haibara opened its doors in the Nihonbashi district of Edo (now Tokyo) in 1806. From its heyday as a purveyor of fine washi paper in the nineteenth century through the turbulent years of Japan’s modernization and beyond, it has continued to add grace to everyday life through originally designed paper products tailored to the needs and tastes of each age. This richly illustrated book tells the 200-year story of Haibara and the renowned artists who contributed designs for its merchandise, among them Takehisa Yumeji, Shibata Zeshin, Kawase Hasui, and Kawanabe Kyosai. Showcased are some 200 products and items, including nearly fifty superlative examples of colorful woodblock-printed chiyogami paper.

A Challenge For All Liberals
Format: Paperback
I thought the book was well-written, impeccably sourced, wide-ranging, and with a thesis that can't help but make you think. Well worth your time.

The history is unpleasant and therefore worth knowing.
It's a wonderfully enlightening history of how European explorers visited, settled in, conquered, and exploited other continents with unparalleled cruelty in the name of power, greed, and their "loving" religion that brought them misery, exploitation and, all too often, abject slavery.

Wonderful History Lessons
I ordered this book to use for a college paper I was writing and found it fascinating. I enjoyed the content and learned much from it. The history is written in a manner that for those people that either don't read much or don't like to read (yes, there are a few people out there), it will draw you in and make you question the history lessons we suffered through in high school.
